WHEW! What a busy two weeks I’ve just had. 

Just got back from a week with Mom and here is just a snippet of what we did.

You'll have to read more for the rest of the story.
I just spent a week with my mother which is a high priority as well. It was a great visit with both her and my sister.

So to get back to work here I wanted to share a story of my trip to Mom's and it involves a slipcover.

My mother is battling cancer, stage IV and diagnosis is not favorable but the attitude to beat it is, is that not half the battle. Mother is battling her fight through her diet to keep things as normal as possible. But this is another conversation for another time. 

At 84 my mother’s norm is busy, she does circles around me with her going and running and she loves it. Mother doesn't like sitting idle for too long. She loves being busy and out doing things. Just this week alone while I was there, in a three day span, we went to two movies, a high school stage production, spent time playing cards with friends and delivered a slipcover. 

Yes, you read that right, we delivered a slipcover. At 84 my Mother still desires to make slipcovers. Like I said Mom likes to be busy……here are the pictures to prove it.

This cute slipcover was the easy solution that the clients chose to cover their Duncan Phyfe sofa. The cover was totally worn out as you see from pictures below, plus it needed to be a removable washable cover so their animals could live on the furniture as well. The fabric they chose was a washable fleece. It turned out to be an excellent choice as you see here how nice it turned out.

Fleece is available in so many patterns now that it can be used for a huge variety of items for either home or clothing. It is very durable, cleanable and stylish all in one piece of fabric, just think how comfortable it will feel under your skin as well. Can it get any better?

The best part for the DIY’er is that fleece is easy to work with, easy to cut and easy to stitch.

This is the first time I’ve seen a slipcover made out of fleece and boy do I like it. The construction was simple with no fussy detail, allowing the pattern of the fabric shine. It is a basic throw with separate covers for the cushions and it will last a long time.

I’ll be looking for projects around my house that I can cover with fleece for these cooler months. I love changing out covers for seasons and fleece would be a perfect choice to warm the feel of the room. Well I’ll let you know how that goes for another time.

Do you love to sew?


Maybe you would like to learn to sew.

I have been very fortunate that sewing has always been a part of my life.  I grew up surrounded by fabrics, trims, thread, sewing machines and a Mom who had a passion for sewing and made it her livelihood.
Mother owned and operated a custom home decor sewing business in the basement of her home, in KY, to earn a living for her family while staying home to be with her children.

You see, I come from a long line of seamstresses.Grandmother, Mother's mother, had an upholstery shop in the back of her home and Mother's grandmother served her family by sewing and mending clothes, teaching and sharing her skills with my Mom.

I worked in Mother's drapery business on and off all during my 20's and when I married and moved away at 30 I took my skill set with me and began my own custom home decor sewing business.

I'm burnt out on sewing for others and now I do much more.  Sharing my sewing whims, creations, designs, attempts, mistakes through my past 30 plus years of sewing sharing tips, techniques, 'how to's' and showing you completed projects (some may even be for sale) has now become my new passion.  

Having trained with my mother, I learned all the facets of working a home decor custom sewing business and will be sharing much more with you along the way.  

There is so much information inside my head that I could probably share something with you every week for the next 20 years and not cover everything. 

I do currently have an on-line shop where I sell some of my creations.  I must have an outlet and I have no interest in opening a brick and mortar store and doing festivals or craft fairs do not work into my home schedule right now, so a virtual store works great.

Growing up around pretty fabrics, trims and sewing machines seemed like a natural thing and I just assumed everyone else did too.  But as I got older I realized that growing up in a custom home decor sewing business had been a gift not a norm.  

I'm just glad I was smart enough to pay attention.
I was fascinated watching my mother create all of these different designs.  She would work on these items, calculating, cutting, sewing and then installing and it always seemed to turn out just right every time. Little did I know just how much pressure really went with it?

Mother was very particular with her work and would not let me touch it too often, after all she was being paid to produce and productivity had to be profitable.  It was her main source of living and she just seemed to thrive in it.
Sewing provided a means for Mom to be able to stay home with her children.  I have many memories of coming in after school heading to the studio and seeing her hard at work to get a job done.

Well mother does still sew but not nearly anywhere like she use to.  I did end up working with her off and on from late teens until I was 29 and for the next 20 years I took up where I left off with her and ventured out on my own; sewing custom home decor so that I could keep a flexible schedule for my family.

I eventually found my main interest leaned toward making slipcovers, that was what I enjoyed the most. I knew there were not many around that make slipcovers and it seemed to be a dying art. So I decided to narrow my services down to just specializing in slipcovers and some accessories.
